The Batch Collect XTensions module allows QuarkXPress users to gather all elements required to produce or archive an entire group of QuarkXPress documents. This XTensions module works like QuarkXPress's built-in collection feature, but allows the user to work with more than a single document at a time. Select the documents to process using the file-selection dialog, check off the elements to be collected, and click the collect button. An option is provided to create a separate folder for each document, holding only those elements required to produce the individual job. There is also an option to save the updated documents under a different file name. Select jobs using the file-selection dialog and click ok. Batch Update XTensions module scans the documents and updates the pictures. For missing pictures, instruct Batch Update XTensions module to prompt the user for their location, skip the picture, or specify up to ten search volumes or folders and let Batch Update XTensions module find them automatically. Enable the search all subfolders option, and Batch Update XTensions module will scan through all subfolders of the specified search path as well. BlackLining works in conjunction with QuarkXPress and InDesign to allow a user to retain a complete audit trail of all changes made to text in QuarkXPress, InDesign, or Word documents. It is essential for users in financial, legal, reporting, medical, and other markets where the tracking of text content changes is critical.

Regulations now make executives of companies personally responsible for the content in their publications and BlackLining ensures that they are fully secure in the knowledge that they have reviewed all the alterations that may have occurred.

BlackLining tracks changes made to the text of a document as it is being revised. See a complete history of changes that have occurred. Text inserts are shown as underlines and text deletes can either be shown as strike through, or have a caret mark from where text has been deleted. BlackLining has the unique feature of tracking different revision cycles. By choosing different revision cycles it is possible to show a complete history of all the text changes made to a document as it passes through the revision process.

If a run of text or word or letter is deleted it will be marked as strike through — a line through the center of text in a bold form or color that shows it as being struck out. New text that is inserted will be marked as underlined, again in bold or colored, so that it is apparent to the reader that it is a new insert.

It may be obvious though that to retain all the deleted text in a document could mean that it becomes greatly increased in pagination to encompass all the deletes; to enable the pagination to remain correct, it is possible to change views so that strike-through text is hidden but its presence marked only by a small mark or caret. Words that have been inserted or deleted will appear or disappear depending on the revision level being displayed, Up to 98 revisions level can be recorded.

Preferences govern the screen display and the printed output, and these can be set for individual revision levels as well. In addition there is an option to highlight all on-screen marks and have sidebar markers when printed.

A special characters' feature allows a live header of a document to be created so that, if used on a master page for example, all pages can have document information such as name, date and time, as well as BlackLining revision numbers and a checksum.

A history file records the actions taken in a documents' history and this can be printed or exported — which may be useful for billing or auditing.

The original version of BlackLining has been available since 1996 and has been widely adopted by major companies involved in preparing documents such as annual reports, share issues, bond and debt Issues, and statutory reporting to US (EDGAR), UK, and other stock exchanges. For certain types of document, maintaining an audit trail of changes is a mandatory requirement of such regulatory bodies as SEC (Securities and Exchange Commission) in the US, LSE (London Stock Exchange), and FSA (Financial Services Authority) in the UK.

Over time, BlackLining has gained new features that have increased its value in a wide range of non-financial sectors such as legal documents, disclaimers, terms and conditions, and government reporting. Many non-financial industries are also now stringently regulated so BlackLining QuarkXPress might well be used for documents relating to pharmaceuticals, health and safety, food labeling, and so on.

With a file mover option, the user can select a file and specify the destination disc and/or folder to where the file will be copied. The file and all its linked files (including DCS files if required) will be transferred. When moving or copying a file, the user may select to also move the QuarkXPress preferences file and any other required auxiliary files at the same time.

If any linked graphics are missing or modified, the XTensions module provides an auto find utility which is a high-performance search tool that will search through predefined volumes or folders for the missing graphics. The user can completely control the process by specifying default search paths.

When moving files, the XTensions module will also optionally present a special-instructions dialog which allows the user to direct the service bureau in choices of print medium, film setting, screen-line settings, and resolution. Popup menus for instructing the service bureau as to the priority of the job and trapping instructions are also available as well as shipping and general-comment fields. As part of the special instructions, the user may include such information as company details, the system, and QuarkXPress environments. All items in the special-instructions dialog are user configurable, therefore, the user has complete control over what options appear in the popup menus. The report generator comes with 12 predefined document reports. Each of these can be easily modified to include the exact document report details required. A report can be created on the fly for any document, opened or unopened, or generated for the document during the move-to-bureau process.

With the Copy Grabber XTensions module, cut, copy, or paste an entire column of tabular copy — don't delete columns one line at a time — move them whole.
